Other permitted applications for fire-protective glass include doors and openings of less than 100 square inches in size. This new 120,000 square foot, state-of-the-art convening center features a 1,000-seat auditorium that is large enough to host the entire MBA class. The glass atrium floods the multi-purpose lobby with natural light, as well as provides a visual connection between the interior of the building and the outdoor environment. To maximize transparency, SAFTI FIRST met with the architects during the design phase to create a large, 2-hour, glass wall that separates the lobby from the auditorium while providing a visual connection between them. Since this 2-hour glass wall also serves as the entrance to the auditorium, deciding on a 90-minute door system was of upmost important.

EI Class

The lesser Fire Protective glazing defends against smoke and Flames whereas Fire Resistive glazing is more advanced in design and restricts the dangerous transmission of radiant heat. SCHOTT PYRAN® is one of the market leaders in fire-resistant glazing thanks to its combination of high resistance to fire, hot gases and smoke, and stylish appearance. A popular choice for airports, hotels and shopping malls, it retains its transparency and stability, even under high thermal loads, which is vital to make evacuation quicker and safer. In most cases, fire-rated glass can be used for windows, doors, and partitions to help meet building regulation requirements.

Fire resistance: our brands

  • Most fully glazed fire doors can be double glazed or triple glazed, as required.
  • Fire rated glazing is categorised by the amount of time it provides protection for under the effects of a fire.
  • Framing elements for fire-protective and fire-resistive glazings must achieve the same levels of compliance, meaning they have been tested to stay in place for the same amount of time during a fire as the glasses they contain.
  • Single fire resistant glass consists of a single hardened window, fitted with a fire resistant coating.

  • A basic polished, cost-effective, fire-rated ceramic, this glass has the largest tested dimensions in the market and is the world’s first and only floated-glass ceramic developed specifically for architectural applications.

Fire resistance is defined as the ability of an element of construction to perform its design function during exposure to fire. Guidance for the levels of fire-resistance required when glass is positioned in different areas within a building is detailed part of Building Regulations Approved Document B (AD B). Different ratings are used in different applications from offices to shopping centres and more. Our Products

When exposed to a fire, it prevents flames and hot gases from penetrating through to the unexposed side. The partitions separating compartments or rooms must achieve specific periods of fire resistance, meaning the fire-resistant performance of any glazing in such walls is crucial. Fire rated glass is an important part of a building structure to protect exit and escape routes with clear, frameless or architecturally designed glazing.

This is due to the Laminate Interlayers or Wire incorporated in to the glass itself to provide its Fire Resistant properties. SCHOTT has an established partner network that offers our customers the opportunity to source architectural products from carefully selected partners in different regions. Layered fire resistant glass consists of 2 glass panels that have been laminated to each other. This glazing is available with a fire resistant coating on one side or two sides, and 30 minutes or 60 minutes delay. Single fire resistant glass consists of a single hardened window, fitted with a fire resistant coating.

These labels specifically identify the product name, basic characteristics and compliance with impact safety requirements. The letters now replace the test standard numbers - The IBC made these revisions to help in better matching product with application. If a product has been tested to more than one standard, it will show multiple letter markings. Refer to the markings listed here to indicate the type of assembly the glazing has been tested for as well as the number of minutes of fire resistance or fire protection. Fire-protective glazing is designed to help compartmentalise buildings by defending against the spread of flames and smoke for the amount of time specified (i.e. 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes, etc.).

It is imperative that the fire rating classifications are paid strict attention to as this is the test evidence that demonstrates the ability of each system. The first (and only) floated fire-protective glass-ceramic, environmentally-friendly SCHOTT PYRAN® Platinum by McGrory Glass offers the largest sheet sizes in the industry – 51 x 99 inches – with a neutral gray tone (no amber tint). All wired products have sharp edges and must be handled with more care than all other types of Fire Glass, which feature foil taped edges. Insulation (Measured in Minutes) defines the resistance to the passage of heat through the glass.

Our glass solutions can resist these threats while also meeting a complete range of building requirements. When integrated into aesthetically appealing steel, aluminium or timber systems, our glazed solutions ensure a high level of protection can be seamlessly integrated into multiple applications to serve the broader architectural vision. This monolithic (2.1M X 3.2M), thermally tempered borosilicate glass offers exceptional quality of fire-resistant glazing and highly appealing versatility. PYRAN®S soaks up much larger amounts of heat before deforming and allows it to achieve far high integrity ratings than conventional soda-lime products; it can even be used as a butt jointed system to achieve 60 minutes integrity. The range offers excellent resistance against heat to 450ºC, making it an excellent product to use in heat deflection for fire pits, as well as for use where high temperatures, anything up to 350 degrees Centigrade, are prevalent. Fire-resistive glazing has no such limitation; instead, it adds further protection by blocking the transfer of radiant and conductive heat.

Promat is active in the Fire Resistant Glass & Glazing Group (FRGG) who have undertaken a number of https://buyglass.co/glass/7-2mm-pyroguard/ initiatives, such as the training of glass/glazing installers to a level of competency for the installation of fire resistant glass. Central to the new UC Davis Medical Center Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion's design was a large skylight that allows natural light to vertically flow into the atrium area and other light wells throughout the building. However, they also wanted to let light flow horizontally into the adjacent hallways, rooms, etc. Because the walls in the atrium and light wells have to meet a 2-hour rating, Stantec Architects approached SAFTI FIRST® for a solution. Large portions of the 2 hour atrium and light well walls were made “transparent” with the use of SuperLite II-XL 120 in GPX Framing.

Furthermore, a wealth of literature, including Specifiers Guides, are available to download.Promat offers expert insights into fire-resistant glazing specifications with the RIBA-Approved CPD 'The Burning Question'. SAFTI FIRST® provided a unique, artistic 2-hour fire resistive glass floor to the new Union Square Station in San Francisco. This glass floor acts as a lightwell and designed to improve wayfinding by welcoming commuters into the concourse level while meeting all the fire rated code requirements.

Fire-resistant glass or fire-rated glass is a specially made and tested glass used to prevent the spread of fire and hot gasses or smoke. It helps ensure people can safely evacuate from a building in case of a fire and that firefighters can access the location. Using fire rated glass doors is a great way of achieving a sleek appearance while also ensuring fire safety. These include wired, ceramic, heat-soaked modified thermally toughened, resin-laminated and more. Each type has unique characteristics that contribute to its fire-resisting capabilities. Every piece of genuine fire-rated glass carries specific marks and certifications.
